Still Life's & Curiosities
I have become a word collector, an image junkie, and sponge. I scan thrift stores and eavesdrop on conversations. Catching fragments of dialogue in passing evokes a watchful curiosity. Take from daily life---a book, a wind up toy, a candy wrapper, mix them together; this is how I make art. I am interested in bringing connection to ordinary objects through their juxtaposition. The space within a three dimensional still-life is a place where the main characters mingle and conversations are overheard.

The surface of my ceramic work is built up through multiple firings of stains, glazes and laser-printed decals. They are usually slab built and carved. When representing objects that are normally mass-produced, like a mold-made coffee mug or a child's plastic toy, it is important that the object is handmade. It loses it's original function, becoming a one of a kind interpretation of the object. I am intrigued by the idea of memorabilia, that something so seemingly meaningless could contain a great deal of significance. That broken old toy or kitschy mug made in China is one of a kind, to somebody. Oftentimes, the stories I am trying to tell revolve around an ironic search for idealism.
